WBC super-middleweight boxing champion Badou Jack is set for a visit to The Gambia on Tuesday. The country might be doing badly in football but not in boxing as boxers with Gambian nationality are doing it big.
Badou Jack and Patrick Tiger Mendy are flying the Gambian flag high in the hit and defend sport even though very little resources is put into the sports.
Badou, The 32-year-old former Gambian Olympian will be in his father’s home country to present some charity boxing equipment to the Gambia Boxing Association through the National Sports Council for onward distribution to the various boxing gyms.
The ceremony will take place at the Sports Council’s offices on Wednesday, January 27 at 12:00pm.
The boxer, who was handpicked by Floyd Mayweather, Jr. for the fighter’s nascent promotional company, is currently in Sweden to attend the 2016 edition of the Svenska idrottsgalan (Swedish Sports Award) in which he got a nomination for the 2015 Male of the Year category, competing with footballer Zlatan Ibrahimović, orienteering Jonas Leandersson and skier Johan Olsson.
He will be arriving into the country on Tuesday afternoon for a one-week stay before an eventual return back to his base in the United States.
Jack (20-1-1, 12 KOs), retained his WBC super-middleweight title by beating Britain’s George Groves in September 2015.
The Ripper qualified for the 2008 Olympics for The Gambia in the middleweight division where he was the nation’s only flag bearer at the Opening Ceremonies. He started his professional boxing career in Sweden and Finland before relocating to the United States, where he signed with Mayweather Promotions.
