Fifteen Gambian athletes who represented The Gambia in the sub-regional athletics championship all have a medal or two hanging on their necks in the just ended sub-regional athletics championship in Mbour, Senegal Nna Gambia News can report.
The athletes who participated in the 100, 200, 400, 800, 1, 500 meters, long jump and medley relay and they did not disappoint winning eight gold medals in the individual races and four in the medley relay. The team also won three silver medals and seven bronze medals-four of which came from the medley relay.
Sprint stars Adama Jammeh and Gina Bass inspired their colleagues to sweep through their opponents for the medals. Gina won both the 100 and 200meters while Adama Jammeh ease through the finishing line unchallenged in the 200meters. Omar Jammeh and Lamin Keita who represents The Gambia in the 800 and 1,500meteres respectively also finished first in the senior category.
In the junior category, Ebrima Camara and his mate Tijan Keita as well as Demba Marong all won in the 100, 400 and 1,500meters respectively.
Also helping The Gambia to add to the medal table is Abdoulie Asim, Ebrima Jarju aka Kapone in the senior category winning silver in the 100 and 400meters respectively.
Demba Marong won his second medal in the 800meters while Sona Saho also won silver in the 1,500meters in the junior category.
Awa J Jallow, Mariama Fofana, Mariama Manjang and Buba Darboe all won bronze. Awa’s bronze came in the 400meters of the senior girls. Fofana won her bronze in the 400meters junior girls while Mariama Manjang got her bronze from the 100 and 200meters. Buba Darboe also won bronze finishing 3rd in the long jump.
In the medley relay Gina Bass helped Mariama Fofona, Mariama Manjang and Awa J Jallow to finish third a position good enough for a bronze medal for the girls.
In the male category Adama Jammeh helped his colleagues Assan Faye, Ebrima Camara, and Ebrima Jarju aka kapon to win the gold medal in the medley relay.
